2021.11.29 11:54 Chrismatakas I come seeking your help: Email Newsletter Feedback

I come seeking your help: Email Newsletter Feedback Hello, JP fans! I come seeking your help, and thank you for taking the time to read this.
I write books on the 'why' of Jiu Jitsu, books that pair principals of life with principals of Jiu Jitsu. I'm making a transition to concentrate on life principals in my coaching practice, and a good amount of my study has been Jordan Peterson, Carl Jung, etc..
I have started an email newsletter to initiate the uninitiated and I was looking to see if you'll provide feedback. I'll include the first 2-3 newsletters below, separated by "-----". Do you think this information, as written, is useful? Do you have any suggestions for improvements? Anything I should consider?
Introducing “Wednesday Wisdom”
My goal for this email series: I love learning, and I love you. We are all fighting on behalf of Team Good, and the more skillfully we can master ourselves, the more we will have to contribute to the people we serve. Our modern lives are increasingly busy, distracting, and overwhelming. I believe the antidote to modern living is to be found in some very ancient ideas.
My goal is to take the lessons I learn from my study and share them in an organized, accessible, and immediately applicable way so that you can use ancient wisdom to make your life better.
The format: Each lesson will consist of a video, a write up about the video, and a summary. Each lesson will continue to build upon the last, so that we can gain momentum in our education and derive wisdom from our experience.

Lesson #1 – Introduction to Maps of Meaning by Jordan Peterson: The world as forum for action
Video
Jordan Peterson’s Maps of Meaning, I believe, is one of the most worthwhile and necessary books ever written. Though it is not the book’s explicit aim, Maps of Meaning is the best description of the behavioral process of the archetypal hero which has ever been written.
Clearly understanding this book gives one a lens through which to profitably interpret the wide array of books about the hero’s journey, which to be quite honest, can be very difficult to read. Over the next two months (longer, if necessary) we will address the core principles in this book so that you can apply them to your life, to live an extraordinary life, without having to do the heavy lifting of reading.
“The world can be validly construed as a forum for action, or as place of things.”
This is the foundation upon which the entire books rests. The world as a place of things is the domain of the sciences. The world as a forum for action is the domain of the humanities. We do not much care about the world as a place of things; what we are desperately concerned with is how to best act in the world. It is these actions which comprise our own hero’s journey.
Consider the following image which is the singular unit of story (and the narrative we constantly live in):

https://preview.redd.it/769u14bgsj281.jpg?width=624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f14e2acbf3a54020ae92f7dc6906cd96f96ec7b
We know where we are. We have an idea of what will be better. So we take action which we believe will lead to the fulfillment of our desire for a better present. The things we encounter along that journey – people, ideas, flowers and traffic jams are either:
Tools – that which aid us on our path Obstacles – that which impede our path Irrelevances – that which does not affect our path (most things)
The value of these entities is produced solely in relation to our goal. That which aids our path produces positive emotion, that which impedes our path produces negative emotion. We are much more concerned with how the world affects our path than what the world is made of.
This is the framework in which all story is nested. This is the lens through which we will together explore the concept of the hero, which I deeply believe, is the most empowering idea I have ever come across.
Summary:
We view the world as a forum for action much more than as a place of things.
It is our goal, the ideal future we create in our minds and move toward with our actions, which determines the positive and negative value of all things in our lives, as well as that which provides A MAP FOR OUR LIVES. Therefore, we had better know what our goal is. Once we do, the world becomes clear, and we have the opportunity to be the hero: to encounter novelty in the most productive way.
This will be the focus for our second lesson, and underlying theme throughout the next two months, and an idea that can radically transform your life once understood.
See you next week!

Lesson #2 – Maps of Meaning by Jordan Peterson: Emergence of “Revolutionary Novelty” in the Course of Goal-Directed Behavior
Jordan Peterson’s Maps of Meaning, I believe, is one of the most worthwhile and necessary books ever written. Though it is not the book’s explicit aim, Maps of Meaning is the best description of the behavioral process of the archetypal hero which has ever been written.
The book begins:
“The world can be validly construed as a forum for action, or as place of things.”
In the practicalities of living, we are only genuinely concerned with the world as “forum for action.” We are most concerned with how to best act in the world with the time we are given. Therefore, a study of the hero’s journey (as it relates to our daily experience) is most profitable.
Consider the following image, presented last week, which is the singular unit of story (and the narrative we constantly live in):

https://preview.redd.it/kfnyhuhmsj281.jpg?width=624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7b47a79b6e87ba4de3279633371144975639346a
We are always living within this model, but life is not so clear cut. On the way to our Ideal Future, we encounter novelty, which is to say, on the way to our goal we experience something unexpected which makes us re-assess ourselves, our goal, and the pathway to its attainment.
That novelty can be either a tool which aids our journey toward our goal or an obstacle which impedes such movement. This ambivalence is portrayed with the following image:

https://preview.redd.it/jrzjf8lnsj281.png?width=593&format=png&auto=webp&s=5a7c02b10fb18277dd2475fec72c61f20bef4158
I am most concerned with how we respond to threat, as that is the essence of the hero’s journey. It is what we do when we encounter what we did not expect – when we encounter RESISTANCE – which determines who we become and the life we create.
It is the experience of an obstacle to the desired future which forces us to re-evaluate the path, and if the goal remains worth pursing, to double down on the goal, finding alternative means of getting there. Through the lens of the world as a forum for action, the world is broken down into 3 parts: the known (explored territory), the unknown (unexplored territory), and the divine individual (you, the process which mediates the two).
When we encounter threat along our path, we are thrust back into the unknown, and must engage in creative exploratory behavior to make that unknown known, to integrate the information from this novel experience, and continue on our trajectory better equipped from our confrontation with novelty. This is portrayed (albeit, most likely confusingly) here:

https://preview.redd.it/9phgqzbosj281.jpg?width=1082&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6bee73f0fafd514c1d4a9d850c662909f1ac8991
Summary:
In the attached video I have explained this process with more clarity than these images allow, but the message is clear:
We are goal-directed creatures, always aiming up toward a better life, and in that pursuit, we will encounter obstacles which impede that goal. It is in this moment when we must embody the behavioral process of the hero – voluntarily engaging in creative exploratory behavior with the unknown to become more informed and more capable of achieving our goal.
The hero is the one who seeks the benevolent aspect of this unknown encounter.
This unknown is an inevitable aspect of the human experience, as certain as death and taxes. We must become someone capable of repeatedly confronting that unknown in the most productive way. When we do, our lives and the lives of those around us improve.
Next week, we shall discuss how this is done consistently and effectively!

Lesson #3 – Maps of Meaning by Jordan Peterson: Introduction to the Hero
Jordan Peterson’s Maps of Meaning, I believe, is one of the most worthwhile and necessary books ever written. Though it is not the book’s explicit aim, Maps of Meaning is the best description of the behavioral process of the archetypal hero which has ever been written.
In our first email, we described the world as a forum for action. In our second, we described the experience of novelty along the path toward your goal, and that the hero is the one who searches for its benevolence. Now, we seek to understand the hero.
Knowledge, Wisdom, and Story
Through the lens of the world as a forum for action, the type of knowledge we are most implicitly concerned with is knowing how to act. What we seek is procedural knowledge (behavioral wisdom) so we can make the most of the time we are given.
But how do we find this wisdom? And how do we apply this wisdom to the unique aspects of our personal experience?
To answer these questions, we must understand how ideas are formed. Consider the following image from Maps of Meaning:

https://preview.redd.it/v7santlssj281.jpg?width=986&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=76ab141516cfd9b7f8be221e623cdd047966d190
From the top down, this is how we (humanity at large, over eons of time) learn how to act in the world (transmit behavioral wisdom).
First, someone engages in creative exploratory action, turning the unknown into the known and improving the lives of those in the tribe. Then people imitate this behavior. Then this behavior is communicated through story. Then this behavior becomes dogma, religious truth, the narrative by which the tribe lives, and the highest ideal toward which its people aim.
Only later do the philosophers stand on this foundation and semantically describe this process. Most of the time, a community and its people act out the prescription of this ideal without being able to consciously describe what it is they are doing.
We know how to do something long before we know why we do something. This is highlighted perfectly in the works of Jean Piaget, who uses children and games to demonstrate this. Young kids can play games together, following a set of rules, without being able to articulate what those rules are. The game just works, and all the kids know how to play, though they cannot articulate what it is they are playing or why they are playing it. There is an embedded procedural knowledge below the surface.
So how do we find the wisdom of our culture which instructs us how to act?
Story is the vessel by which cultures transmit behavioral wisdom. Myth and Religion, the guiding stories of cultures, portray the actions that the culture most values ( 1) though the culture may not be consciously aware of this, pending the stage of idea development they occupy, and 2) these actions are most valued because they have historically led to the most profitable encounter with the unknown). It is these stories which posses the prescription for success: the voluntary confrontation with the unknown in search of its benevolence.
Embedded within the stories of a culture – whether the religion of a spiritual society, or the entertainment of a secular society (what Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Marvel have become for us) – is the behavioral wisdom of how to best act in the world.
But what is this action which the stories seek to convey?
This is where we look for the meta-action, the lowest level resolution of the message, which can hold true across multiple domains and specifics of experience. At this level of magnification, what is Harry Potter doing when he confronts “he who must not be named”? What is the fundamental behavior process that Ironman practices when he destroys those flying dragon things from Avengers? And how can we apply this wisdom to the specifics of our lives, like, asking for a raise, finding a partner, or finally going to the gym?
The meta-action of the hero goes something like this:
The hero is the one who voluntarily and successfully encounters the unknown, generating wisdom through creative exploration; who voluntarily does the difficult thing on behalf of progress, who leaves the comfort of the known in search of the better, and having found or created that benevolence, shares this with his or her people.
And how do I apply this to the particulars of my life?
This is actually the easy part, relying on the innate wisdom within you. Sit down quietly and ask yourself:
“Where am I not embodying the archetype of the hero? In what areas of my life do I avoid the unknown out of fear? What am I not doing that I know I should do? Where have I shirked the responsibility of voluntarily pursuing the difficult on behalf of progress?”
Provided you allocate a few minutes of quiet, undistracted attention toward these questions, the answers will present themselves to you. And when they do, that’s where your work lies.
Whether at work, home, in your health or in your passions, where have you not been playing the role of the hero?
Admitting where you have not been the hero is the first step toward heroic endeavor.
Summary:
Humanity conveys behavioral wisdom through story. We would be wise to seek the lessons the stories of our cultures seek to convey, and having learned the lesson, apply the meta-action (the tacit prescription of the story) to the particulars of our lives.
Next week, we shall discuss how this is done more concretely!

2021.11.29 11:54 cwt5770 Plus size and old…

I’m wondering if anyone here was overweight/older or even just overweight when they went through IVF? I’ve tried to search here on Reddit but feel like I haven’t found too many stories about plus size IVF. I’m 37, 5’6 and about 240lbs. My weight went up this past year after two miscarriages despite walking 6 miles a day. Because of my age I want to get a move on with this, but I’m also terrified. Does anyone here have experience going through IVF plus size? I’m really concerned about egg retrieval.

2021.11.29 11:54 hesdoneyouagainsteve Bungie please! As a new player I want to play around with builds and different sub classes. However, I’m constantly locked out of many mods due to some sort of stupid restriction on seasonal artefact mods. Having to spend 100,000 glimmer is ridiculous.

I should be enjoying the game and all it’s activities. Only problem is that I’m farming glimmer.
Why put restrictions on creativity?
As this rate I’m probably just gonna have maybe two builds and be done with it.
Either keep all seasonal mods once you’ve unlocked them or do away with glimmer!
Hopefully the latter.
