2021.12.07 18:30 Harry_99_PT Does it get better?

I just finished the chapter and now I don't know if it's even worth playing the game anymore.
>!I had my suspicions, I knew someone was going to go, it's only obvious when playing a game like this that something of sorts will eventually happen, I though it was going to be someone and mentally prepared myself for it. I knew it was going to be this specific chapter (I accidentally half-spoiled myself because my own curiosity took the better of me so I accidentally opened a spoiled post and immedaiately closed it, not before seeing what chapter it was about), so I basically just stopped moving forward in the storyline three chapters ago in hope that it would happen during a duel.!<
>!My prediction was that we had to eventually duel Rakepick but I thought it was going to be a duel where you have to pay and where you can choose what spells to use. What I thought was that Rakepick was too strong for our current level and that we had to eventually pause moving forward so we could get considerably higher in stats so that we could easily beat her, but I was not expecting it to be a cutscene where we can do nothing but wait.!<
>!Up until 5s before it happened, I was fully convinced it was going to be who the game convinced me was going to be and then suddenly they throw us for an unexpected last second plot twist that completely threw me off-guard. I was mentally prepared for smth to happen, but not to him.!<
Does it get better after this? Did I just reach the rock bottom of the game and now things will get better with time? Or will I be setting myself for yet another sad, emotional rollercoaster if I continue playing?

2021.12.07 18:30 ChuggaChuggaJewJew Please Help: Is There A Way To Display Player Names On Screen Who Are Talking With Mic?

Is there a way to have the player's name displayed on the screen when they are talking with their mic?? I know that you can kind of see who is currently talking if you look at the player menu, but I feel like there should be an option to have it just pop up without me having to go digging through that menu to see. Also, I like to toggle between muted and unmuted a lot, so it helps when my name would pop up on screen when I start to speak to remember to mute myself. I've googled and played around with my settings and haven't found anything yet. Am I missing something and this setting is actually there, but I'm too dumb to find it? I'm a new GTA5 online player, so I'm not familiar with all of the setting options yet. I am on PS4 if that helps. Thank you!

2021.12.07 18:30 HighFuncMedium Antarctica 88 Review - Likeably Mediocre

For video review, please watch here:

Screenshots and user reviews certainly give the impression that Antarctica 88 is the second coming of the classic 1980s horror film the Thing. The truth is far less exciting but it’s not all bad. Antarctica 88 or A88--as I’ll call it--is a low-budget endeavor by indie Russian developer Euphoria Games but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have its charms so let’s get stuck in and see if this thing is worth playing!
The first tip you off for what kind of game A88 is going to be is its availability for Steam and….mobile platforms. Mobile players can get the game for free with ads and monetization options that unlock weapons and stuff like that. Today we are reviewing the PC version. Your typical master racists suspect that a cross platform mobile game means a very stripped down experience with short levels and basic mechanics. They’re unlikely to be dissuaded by what A88 offers but mobile players will likely be impressed. Let’s get into details so you can decide for yourself.
So what is A88? Put simply, it’s the Thing but more Russian and with far less scary monsters. Your father has been drilling for minerals in a snowy outpost in the Antarctic but communication was lost so you must travel there to find out what happened to him and the expedition. You soon find the expedition has unearthed some disgusting asset flip creatures who have overrun the outpost and it’s up to you to find your father and escape. Aside from a throwaway twist near the end, the plot is intentionally predictable and relies on the built-in tension of genre tropes. It’s really just there to vaguely contextualize the action, which is fine, as this game simply seems to be interested in simulating the action horror trappings of a Thing style scenario.
The game gives an awkward first impression graphically, with tons of clipping in the first cutscene and from the first enemies I encountered. The backwards hands your main character has when getting up off the ground are medically concerning as well. And while lacking fine detail, the art style looks crisp enough even in 4K resolution. The sound mixing is surprisingly masterful and the score, while repetitive, is tense orchestral stuff that drives you forward at a frantic, paranoid pace. You should take the game up on its recommendation to wear headphones as it definitely amplifies the experience. Environments are dramatically lit and well-detailed in terms of their functionality as a drilling operation and are well-detailed in the gore splattered over them as well. A great big shout-out needs to go the snow effects because these in tandem with the ambient noise really sell the foreboding mood. There’s also a cool day and night cycle too that mirrors real life so play at different times if you want a more varied experience.
Gameplay is essentially just killing monsters and collecting supplemental items to unlock or activate items to progress; you’ll also intermittently drive snow vehicles on your way to larger objectives like activating a radio tower or sabotaging a lab. Along your journey, you’ll acquire an axe, pistol, shotgun, machine gun, flamethrower, and grenade launcher. Gun feel is good and the sound effects and animations are above average, and I especially liked how the pistol and shotgun handled. There are some chokepoints where ammo and health kits dry up but you can often just run past enemies till you find ammo and clear them out later if you need to, at least on Normal difficulty. There’s usually just enough ammo to kill whatever’s nearby but if you run out, the axe is an inconsistent fallback. Its range is so short that you’ll have to crouch to hit the little crustacean guys and likely get hit anyway in this slow moving state. You’ll also get hit quite a lot trying to fight these big ogre dudes because you have to get so close to even hit them that you defeat the purpose of your big axe and have to rely on the spotty hit detection to hit them more times than they hit you. Even if you survive, you’ll have lost copious amounts of health. In short, guns be good but the only thing survival horror about the game is pretty janky.
Once the game opens up a bit though, it’s fine for what it is. Levels are straightforward, cleanly designed, and usually boil down to either a small area requiring some item hunting and switch flipping or some corridor shooting. The first level in particular has an enjoyable escalation in puzzle design as you have to find an axe to knock out some boards to get into the garage but find the key’s missing and there’s no fuel in the snowmobile and the action tree branches further as you go in search of those items. I expected this pattern of each level being sort of one big puzzle to continue but was surprised that there’s really only some light Half-Life style box stacking to get to high areas or some switch flipping. There are several optional objectives that influence your ending but they’re not much fun to backtrack all the way to the beginning for and none of them resemble the “hardcore puzzles” the Steam page promises.
Aside from puzzling and shooting, there are two driving sections, one in a snowmobile you fix up and one in a big snow truck. The truck section is pretty much just you holding the drive button till you stop as some sort of bland palette cleanser from the shooting but holy fuckballs, did I want to throw my keyboard over the same cliff I kept falling off of in my snowmobile. The snowmobile controls can’t keep up with the requirements of the course you have to drive through. You’ll have to slow down to a crawl to not fall of the edge in some very narrow sections but also somehow know that you’ll need to pick up enough speed right around the corner so you can make a jump or you’ll fall to your death. These abrupt changes lead to a lot of trial and error deaths and it’s not like getting the course right is some adrenaline rush, it’s just this sort of filler “let’s not shoot something for five minutes, k guys” kind of additions to feign variety.
So what about Antarctica 88 is appealing enough for its Mostly Positive score? Good question. On basic numbers alone, this game shouldn’t be held in the high esteem of other much deeper and more rewarding experiences in the same score range. Yet there’s a disarming inoffensiveness to the game that may be fooling some people in thinking not terrible is pretty good. The puzzles barely show themselves and the driving is fine, so it’s mostly the shooting that has to carry the whole experience. There’s not a ton of horror moments outside of some dark, interconnected caves you must traverse with your flashlight out. Doom 3 these are not, although there was one good jump scare that nearly gave me cardiac arrest when a crustacean snuck up on me. While the actual mechanics aren’t particularly satisfying, the pacing of the puzzles and the driving sequences in combination with combat is actually pretty well done as I never felt like I was doing something for too long.
But overall should you buy Antarctica 88? On mobile, I would probably say yes as it’s how you say FREE with ads, and it’s a much more visceral game than you normally get to play on your phone. On PC, however, the bar is much higher for what’s interesting and the game falls very much into the middle or back of the pack. The Unity asset flipping is silly if understandable, although I can’t wrap my head around how the literal Demogorgon model shows up without provoking a lawsuit. The combat’s a little janky but the guns feel good to shoot, reminding me of Killing Floor 2, a masterclass in that area. I do wish combat was complemented by more multi-stage item hunts or puzzles though as I enjoyed those light brain teases when they occurred. The length of about 1.5 to 2 hrs for $6 bucks American may irk some folks but that’s pretty much personal preference and I never quite bought the “you spent hundreds of hours making even the most mediocre game now you have to sell several thousand copies to even break even.” But if you’ve got money burning a hole in your pocket or just want something to occupy your afternoon, you could do much worse. You could also do much better by picking up Black Label’s 2002 game, which will actually scratch your Thing itch and not just remind you of it. Man, I should really find a copy of that thing….

Any suggestions for how to do this. I have a few students with this goal and the only thing I can think of is repetition and that is obviously not all that engaging.
Some students have it as a writing goal and some students have it just as writing/or spoken but I'll probably be targeting writing it down.

2021.12.07 18:30 shenfootball36 Are we allowed to round up our height? I’m 5’9”3/4, am I allowed to say I’m 5’10”?

I’ve heard a bunch of stories of people being misleading in terms of their height. I always wondered if this is an acceptable distance to round of if it’s disingenuous. I’m wondering if there is a difference in answer based on the situation too, like should I say 5’9” at the doctors but 5’10” when talking to a friend or a date?
